SCALe INFO DAY at Universiti Malaya Highlights Smart City Innovation in Malaysia

On August 14, 2024, Universiti Malaya (UM) hosted the SCALe INFO DAY at Seminar Room A (BSFA), gathering 37 participants for an insightful exploration into smart city development within the Malaysian and broader ASEAN context. The event served as a platform to promote the SCALe project’s objectives while fostering dialogue on sustainability, mobility, energy innovation, and education through the SCALe micro-courses.
The workshop opened with a warm welcome session, where Dr. Ong Gerard and Prof. Dr. Ramesh T. Subramaniam greeted participants, followed by an introduction to the SCALe project by Prof. S. Ramesh, who outlined its significance and impact on smart city transformation in Southeast Asia. A series of engaging presentations followed, each delving into a critical dimension of smart city evolution.
Dato’ Mani Usilappan offered insights on smart city initiatives from a real estate perspective, highlighting their transformative effect on urban development. Mr. Tan Sang Hup discussed innovative energy pricing strategies, while Mr. Surender Gunalan emphasized the integration of smart mobility solutions and data in urban planning. Dr. Prasankumar Thibeorchews addressed challenges in smart mobility, sharing practical solutions for sustainable urban infrastructure. The session concluded with Dr. Shahid Bashir and Prof. Dr. Ramesh Kasi presenting sustainable technologies and introducing the SCALe micro-courses aimed at supporting capacity building in smart city domains.
The event wrapped up with closing remarks by Prof. Dr. Ramesh T. Subramaniam, followed by a survey, a group photo, and a networking lunch. This final session encouraged collaboration among participants and deepened engagement with the SCALe project’s mission to advance smart, sustainable, and inclusive cities across the ASEAN region.
