NUM SCALe Info Day Showcases Cambodia’s Smart City Vision and Collaborative Innovation
On August 28, 2024, the National University of Management (NUM) welcomed 46 participants to the Camboverse Center for its SCALe INFO Day, highlighting Cambodia’s growing engagement in smart city development. The event began with a keynote from Mr. Kai Kurimoto of NIPPON KOEI CO., LTD, who shared insights from the Siem Reap smart city project supported by JICA. His presentation emphasized the importance of international collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and the application of best practices in building efficient and people-centered smart cities.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nop Kanharith provided an in-depth overview of the SCALe project, presenting its strategic vision, key milestones, and upcoming micro-courses aimed at strengthening capacity in smart governance, digital infrastructure, and urban innovation. He highlighted the necessity of cultivating both advanced IT and transversal skills to equip future professionals for the demands of smart city ecosystems. Ms. Ly Sokunthy expanded the discussion by exploring the integration of family businesses within smart cities, underscoring their critical role in sustaining local economies and fostering community-driven innovation.
The day continued with a look at policy and governance, led by Dr. Cheav Kirirom, who outlined the importance of coherent regulatory frameworks to support smart city initiatives in Cambodia. He advocated for inclusive governance that ensures digital transformation benefits all citizens. Wrapping up the event, Assist. Prof. Dr. Siem Monileak introduced participants to cutting-edge practices in smart tourism management, highlighting digital tools that can elevate Cambodia’s tourism industry and boost its contribution to the national economy. The SCALe Info Day at NUM provided a rich platform for dialogue, learning, and momentum toward inclusive smart city development.
