ITC INFO DAY Highlights Smart City Innovations and Capacity Building through SCALe

On August 26, 2024, the Institute of Technology of Cambodia (ITC) hosted the SCALe INFO Day in Room A-109, gathering 38 participants for a comprehensive exploration of smart city development in Cambodia. The event opened with welcoming remarks from Dr. SIM Tepmony and Dr. BUN Long, ITC’s Deputy Director General, who emphasized the growing importance of digital and soft skills in the Industry 4.0 era. Dr. BUN also underlined the SCALe project’s alignment with Cambodia’s digital transformation goals, celebrating ITC’s involvement in advancing smart city education.

The morning sessions featured a series of engaging presentations starting with an overview of the SCALe project by Dr. EK Pichmony, followed by insights into the role of data science in smart city development from Dr. Phauk Sokkhey, who used Seoul as a case study to illustrate the impact of big data in urban planning. Mr. ENG Khun showcased Phnom Penh’s progress with intelligent transport systems (ITS), highlighting both ongoing projects and challenges the city faces as part of the ASEAN Smart Cities Network. These sessions offered a practical look at how data and mobility are transforming urban spaces in Cambodia.

In the afternoon, participants explored the role of urban farming and smart agriculture with Mr. Hel Chanthan and Dr. Ket Pinnara, who shared examples of smart irrigation and aquaculture initiatives that contribute to sustainable urban living. Mr. Pich Reatrey concluded the day with a critical session on cybersecurity in smart cities, stressing the need for digital awareness among citizens and the importance of safeguarding data at every level. The SCALe INFO Day at ITC provided a dynamic platform for participants to understand how the project’s micro-courses will build essential competencies for a smarter, more sustainable future.
