AIT and CMU Co-Host SCALe Info Day to Advance Smart City Innovation in Northern Thailand
On October 28, 2024, the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) and Chiang Mai University (CMU) jointly hosted a SCALe Info Day at the ibis Styles Hotel, Chiang Mai, bringing together 36 participants from academia, industry, and government. Originally scheduled for August, the workshop was postponed due to extended flooding in the region—highlighting the importance of smart, data-driven solutions to tackle climate-related urban challenges.
The event introduced participants to the ASEAN Smart City Learning Network (SCALe) and explored the pivotal role of innovation and emerging technologies in smart city development. Key sessions included deep dives into self-driving car technology, Industrial IoT for smart factories, and data-driven innovation through community engagement. Special attention was given to smart healthcare, with a forward-looking presentation on how digital health solutions could expand access and efficiency in Northern Thailand.
Speakers and panelists also examined how local issues—such as flood management and air pollution (PM2.5)—could be addressed through integrated urban systems and collaborative approaches. The Info Day underscored the value of regional cooperation and interdisciplinary knowledge exchange in building sustainable, resilient, and citizen-centered smart cities. The joint efforts of AIT and CMU reflect a strong commitment to leveraging education, research, and technology for a smarter ASEAN.
